When most local newsletter operators discuss growth strategies, paid Facebook ads dominate the conversation. But what if limited cash flow means you can't pour money into advertising? Phat Chiem of The 518 in Albany has demonstrated that organic, relationship-based growth strategies can build a substantial subscriber base without breaking the bank.
After nearly a year of publishing, Chiem's newsletter reaches 2,300 subscribers – virtually all acquired through organic methods. His approach offers valuable insights for newsletter operators looking to grow sustainably on limited budgets.
Reddit has proven particularly fruitful for The 518, with approximately 600-800 of their first subscribers coming directly from the platform. Leveraging Albany's active subreddit of 64,000 members, Chiem took a distinctly non-spammy approach.
"I just simply went on there, first of all, just introduced myself, being very authentic and saying, 'Hey guys, we're new to the area, we started up this newsletter, we'd love it for you to check it out and subscribe if you like what you see,'" Chiem explains.
The key to Reddit success? Consistent, valuable participation beyond just promoting your newsletter. Chiem regularly contributes to discussions about local issues, especially when they relate to topics covered in The 518. This authentic engagement earned such goodwill that moderators eventually featured the newsletter in the subreddit's sidebar.
Taking this approach a step further, Chiem created a dedicated subreddit called "518 Events" focusing on happenings around the capital region. This community has grown to about 2,000 followers, providing a platform where he can share The 518's weekly event roundups while inviting readers to subscribe for direct delivery.
Social media remains another crucial channel for organic growth. Chiem maintains that social following is "just as important, it's crucial as the subscriber count" – particularly when working with local businesses that may not fully understand newsletter metrics.
"Local businesses, a lot of them do not understand what a newsletter is," he notes. "They are much more focused on a vanity metric, like how big is your Instagram, how big is your Facebook." The 518 has built a combined social following approaching 10,000 across platforms, which helps demonstrate their reach to potential advertisers and partners.
Community involvement forms another pillar of Chiem's growth strategy. He regularly attends Chamber of Commerce events, happy hours, and local gatherings with business cards in hand. "You have to get out there. You have to build relationships. You have to shake hands," he emphasizes.
This slow-growth approach offers benefits beyond cost savings. Without the pressure of managing explosive subscriber growth, Chiem has been able to focus intently on content quality and audience understanding. "Being really thoughtful about the content, about the audience, and not having a huge growth, I think, allows us to do that," he explains.
For newsletter operators with limited advertising budgets, the lesson is clear: meaningful community engagement, valuable online participation, and consistent quality can build a substantial audience without significant ad spend. While growth may come more gradually, the resulting audience is often more engaged and the business more sustainable for the long term.
